The Mama Project is an intercultural, interracial, intergenerational creative project for women from township communities in South Africa who collaborate with female artists from the United States to create art, tell stories, connect and share culture. Working across divides, women express themselves, develop skills, build trust and bridges, develop confidence, find joy and healing, deepen understanding of others, and foster new relationships. Yearly projects culminate in exhibits, performances and workshops shared with our local communities.

I am not the things my family did

— Dr. Heather Stern,
Executive Director, The Mama Project
"She has big, crazy ideas that are beyond what others can imagine, and then she brings them to life. All of us are changed because of it. It’s an honor and a beautiful journey to collaborate with her."
